Endoscopy Overview

Endoscopy is a generic term used for any investigation that uses a fibre-optic scope to look inside the patient’s body. The first procedure that used this technology was a gastroscopy and because of this these two terms were used synonymously. Some clinicians persist with this nomenclature which of course is confusing for the rest of us.

Dr Renaut’s endoscopy service includes Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy and Flexible Sigmoidoscopy. There are specific indications for performing these procedures which you can discuss with either your GP (if booked as an open access) or when you see Dr Renaut in his office. They are generally done as a day-case and under sedation, although there is usually no requirement for the latter with Flexible Sigmoidoscopy.
